Hadith 6928

Book 89: The Book of Obliging The Apostates and The Repentance of Those Who Refuse The Truth Obstinately, and To Fight Against Such People

كِتَاب اسْتِتَابَةِ الْمُرْتَدِّينَ وَالْمُعَانِدِينَ وَقِتَالِهِمْ

Chapter 4

(4) Chapter. If a Dhimmi or somebody else abuses the Prophet by playing upon words but not frankly, e.g., by saying, "As-Samu Alaika."

4- بَابُ إِذَا عَرَّضَ الذِّمِّيُّ وَغَيْرُهُ بِسَبِّ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَمْ يُصَرِّحْ نَحْوَ قَوْلِهِ السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ:

English narration

Narrated by عبد الله بن عمر العدوي

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "When the Jews greet anyone of you they say 'Sam'Alaika (death be upon you); so you should say; 'Wa 'Alaika (and upon you).'"

النص العربي

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، وَمَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ دِينَارٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا ، يَقُولُ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : "

إِنَّ الْيَهُودَ إِذَا سَلَّمُوا عَلَى أَحَدِكُمْ إِنَّمَا يَقُولُونَ : سَامٌ عَلَيْكَ ، فَقُلْ عَلَيْكَ

" .
