Hadith of the Bankrupt (al-Muflis): “Do You Know Who the Bankrupt Is?”
5 hadith in the six books
The bankrupt of my Ummah is he who would come on the Day of Resurrection with prayers, fasts and Zakat, but he had hurled abuses upon others, brought calumny against others, unlawfully consumed the wealth of others, shed the blood of others and beaten others. His virtues would be credited to the account of those who suffered at his hand, and if his good deeds fall short of clearing the account, their sins would be entered into his account and he would be thrown into the Fire.
Abu Hurayra narrates that the Prophet asked his companions, “Do you know who the bankrupt is?” They answered that the bankrupt among them was one with no dirham and no goods. He explained that the bankrupt of his community is the one who comes on the Day of Resurrection with prayer, fasting and zakat, but having abused, slandered, consumed the wealth of, shed the blood of and struck others; his good deeds are given to those he wronged, and if they run out, their sins are cast upon him.
Muslim records it in the chapter on the prohibition of oppression, and Tirmidhi in the chapter on reckoning and retribution. Bukhari and Tirmidhi record related reports urging a person to settle wrongs with others before a day when there will be no dinar or dirham.
