Hadith Jibril: Islam, Iman and Ihsan
7 hadith in the six books
أَنْ تَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ كَأَنَّكَ تَرَاهُ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ تَرَاهُ فَإِنَّهُ يَرَاكَ
(Ihsan is) to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion then you must consider that He is looking at you.
In this hadith a man appears among the companions and asks the Prophet about Islam, iman (faith), ihsan (excellence) and the Hour and its signs. After he leaves, the Prophet tells them it was Jibril, who came to teach the people their religion.
Bukhari and Muslim record it from Abu Hurayra; Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasa'i and Ibn Majah record the longer narration of Umar ibn al-Khattab, transmitted by his son Abdullah.
