Sayyid al-Istighfar: The Best Supplication for Forgiveness
5 hadith in the six books
O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I hold to Your covenant and promise as much as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favour upon me and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for none forgives sins but You.
Shaddad ibn Aws narrates that the Prophet called this supplication the “master of seeking forgiveness” (sayyid al-istighfar), and said that whoever says it with certainty during the day and dies before evening, or at night and dies before morning, is among the people of Paradise.
Bukhari records it in the book of supplications; Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasa'i and Ibn Majah record it among morning and evening remembrances.
