Li'an (اللعان) and Mula'anah: Meaning in Hadith

5 hadith in the six books

اللِّعَانِ

li'an; mula'anah

Root: ل ع ن

Li'an (also mula'anah) is the procedure set out in Surat al-Nur (24:6–9) for a husband who accuses his wife of adultery without four witnesses: he swears four times by Allah that he is truthful and a fifth time invokes Allah's curse on himself if he is lying, and she swears four times that he is lying and a fifth time invokes Allah's wrath on herself if he is truthful. The hadith describe the cases of Uwaymir al-Ajlani and Hilal ibn Umayya, after which the couple were separated.

The similar-looking word la''an, “one who curses much”, is a different word from the same root.
