ishtimal al-samma'

Root: ش م ل

Ishtimal al-samma' is a way of wearing a single garment that the Prophet forbade, mentioned alongside ihtiba' (sitting with the knees drawn up in one garment). Lexicographers describe it as wrapping the whole body in one garment so that no opening is left for the hands, like a solid rock (samma'); jurists describe it as wrapping in one garment and throwing one end over the shoulder so that the private parts are exposed.
